This is my take on the Quickly prompt to amplify one of Basho’s poems.
I only wrote two lines for each of the haiku lines, but I’m lazy. You could write a novel on either side of each line.
I Am Eleven and Have Been Promised a Horse
A hundred stacks of paper dreams
define her as teeth
surrounded by caramel pie.
So tall on her delicate ankles,
a trumpet in the sun.
My big brass horse; and her mouse
because this is my dream.
Clip-clopping over the fields–Oh ho!
I too am part of the picture!
Death Is No Bitch
He will come up from the mountain.
He will stand beneath the sky.
He won't want to act, and will have to;
he'll climb out of there and fly.
He will fall a million times, but in silence;
half a million times more not making a sound.
A man's spirit is glowing,
but he'll never burn until he's born.
And it won't be
hot in the fire
It won't be hot
He will give up the diving bell
sixty-one leagues under the sea.
He will disregard his enemies,
not show it by spreading his wings.
He'll sit on his tail, but he'll listen.
He'll sit on his tail but he'll laugh.
Man's body comes from underground
and he'll never fall until he's born.
And it won't be
Hell down here
It won't be Hell
He's a dead man
but he won't stay dead forever.
He couldn't live face to face with hate
and facing death, he will die
While no one can see your silence
nothing stops them from hearing you laugh.
He would have been lucky, Harpy
if you'd never drawn a breath.
Death is no bitch
Not a bitch like a three-day-drunk
Death ain't a bitch.

Langston Hughes’ Life is Fine
The Bass Player
He’s not that much to look at. Some scars
from bad teen acne. And his nose, red
as the third day of a cold or the third
decade of drinking to be sociable, but
it is really just red. Just as he is really
almost bald, and overweight and white.
Troglodyte plays a mean bass, though. Inside
the music, he is the complexity of rhythm
with hot brown eyes and educated hands,
and you think–while he’s in the music–
about the last time you were
intense. But he’s really just inside the music.
He’s an adjunct at the junior college. History.
